Child Obesity Statistics – Why the Numbers Are So High

The people today weigh more than their parents and grandparents when they were on the same age. Obesity is a global problem that is extremely serious. It is even classified as epidemic by some. The child obesity statistics are really shocking not only due to the large percentage of obese children. It has been estimated that an obese adolescent has a higher risk of suffering from heart attack, stroke or Type II diabetes much earlier in life. In order for solutions of the problem to be found the causes of obesity has to be assessed first.

The numbers show that 19.6% of the children of 6 to 11 years of age are obese. The percentage of extremely overweight adolescents between 12 and 19 is 18.1%. These are the numbers from the main child obesity statistics, but there are independent studies that claim the percentage of obese children is over 25%. These figures are way too large and they are expected to increase in the following years. But what are the main reasons behind this threatening statistical data?

Perhaps the main reason for child obesity is the lack of sufficient physical activity. In the past the kids used to eat candy and cookies as well, but they also used to play outdoors almost all the time irrespective of the season. The games usually involved a lot of exercise. At present the children are obsessed with computer games which require no physical effort whatever.

The poor diet is also a factor for child obesity. Most kids nowdays love junk food and eat it almost all the time. The fried and sweet foods from the fast food restaurant are also quite popular. The youngsters do not have healthy eating habits. They snack every time and drink primarily sugary carbonated beverages. At the same time they disregard he fruit and the vegetables in particular simply because they are not equally tasty.

Another serious problem is that most families do not have healthy nutrition habits in general. If the parents are overweight and they place their child on a diet, he / she will be extremely unlikely to keep it. Even though there are healthy nutrition educational programs in most schools, the kids can not simply reject the food they are served at home.

The child obesity statistics have high numbers for yet another psychological reason. The lack of self esteem, the stress and the depression lead to greater food consumption. This problem is really serious with adolescents as they are particularly sensitive about the opinion of others.
